From Joy to Despair to Hope in a Blink

Imagine the sheer wonder of your wedding day; marrying the man of your dreams, surrounded by loved ones all joining in the celebration.

dee-and-sonnyNow imagine receiving the worst possible medical diagnosis with your new husband by your side. This is the life and times of Deanna Pisano, married less than two months to the love of her life. She and Sonny returned from their honeymoon to the devastating diagnosis of Stage Four Colon Cancer. Deanna is just 26 years old.

Deanna has already undergone successful surgery to remove the largest tumor and the majority of her colon and is recovering nicely. Through it all, she has maintained her smile, her faith and a contagious spirit of hope. It is reminiscent of the classic song “Smile” by Nat King Cole:

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you

When they should be focused on setting up house to begin their marriage, they are dealing with chemotherapy to shrink the remaining tumors in Dee’s liver. And yet, there is an undeniable sense of hope that surrounds this wonderful couple.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help stem the tide of growing medical bills and the comments friends and family are sharing give just a hint to the love felt for these newlyweds:

• Dee, Sending positive thoughts and energy your way. YOU GOT THIS!
• Saying many prayers for you and thinking of you all the time! You got this! Love you Dee ❤
• Keep a positive attitude! Your mind is a powerful thing. You and Sonny will be in our thoughts.

Even people who haven’t met this wonderful couple are joining the band wagon of Hope:

“Hi Deanna, we have never met. Since we heard the news our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We look forward to meeting you and your new husband in the near future, after you whip this thing! God bless.”

Perhaps the most telling comment of all comes from Cleveland Clinic oncology surgeon Dr. Sricharan Chalikonda, who is now overseeing Dee’s care and advocating for her every step of the way. Dee has been part of the Chalikonda family as nanny to their children. He has this to say:

“Deanna, this has been growing inside you, in my home, as you raise and educate my children. You taught Symon (their youngest son) to read; I can take care of this for you”.

Today, as you look at your own family, loved ones, and close friends, recognize the blessings you have been given. We ask that you consider sharing a little of that goodness with Dee and Sonny. Every donation helps, from $5 to $500, together we can help support, encourage and spread a message of hope to Deanna as she fights to enjoy the wonderful life she and Sonny have yet to begin.

Visit the GoFundMe page “PositiviDEE” and send her a message of hope. Thank you!
