When mother and esthetician Tiffany Parres-Gold began searching for a book on transgender boys, she could not find any children’s books addressing this perspective.
“It boggled my mind that there was nothing out there yet about transgender boys,” Parres-Gold comments. “We need to have this information readily available, especially with everything that is going on in our world today—like the very real threat of transgender health rights getting taken away.”
While incredible advances have been made for transgender rights and recognition in the United States, there is still widespread misunderstanding and ignorance around the transgender experience.
Parres-Gold emphasizes the importance of education. Resources should be available both for those within the trans community, as well as for the general public.
“People are trying to tell trans people who they are when they don’t necessarily understand this experience. People need to be more educated about the trans community,” says Parres-Gold.
Moreover, for children who are growing up trans, she notes, “Every child deserves a book that speaks to their experience.”
To accomplish this goal, Parres-Gold decided to write her own book for children entitled “Ryder’s Journey: Becoming Who He Truly Is” about a trans boy and his transition.
Publisher Lisa M. Umina says, “This is a ground-breaking children’s book that is filling a very important gap in children’s literature. Parres-Gold is helping to teach the importance of acceptance while affirming the identity of trans children everywhere.”
“I have seen the obstacles that trans people in my life have had to go through,” the author adds. “I hope that readers will have a character in this book now that they can relate to. I wrote this book so that people can use it as a tool, to share it with their family or friends and teachers who might not 100% understand what they are going through.”
